SWIM

— Sea Water Incubate Micropower —

Asahi Kasei Corp.(Head Office: Hibiya Mitsui Tower, 1-1-2 Yurakucho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Hidehiro Kobori) and tripod design Co., Ltd. (Head Office: 1-14-17 Kudankita, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Satoshi Nakagawa) will cooperate in producing an art exhibition entitled “SWIM” that features the use of step-up ICs togenerate environmental power. This event will be held from August 23 (Fri) to 31 (Sat), 2019, at the “FICTION” Prototype Gallery for Technology Design in New York City. The title of the exhibit, “SWIM”, combines the meaning of the term to “swim” with its use as an acronym for “Sea Water Incubate Micro power”. Step-up ICs (electric circuits) developed through advanced technology will be employed in an installation that turns on LEDs using only the small amount of power obtained from Water.

OUR TECHNOLOGY:

Energy harvesting is the technology that derives small amounts of energy directly from the environment and converts it into electric power. Efficient power management is a key component for energy harvesting. One of the biggest issues is that the energy consumption from the function of power management is greater than the energy supply derived from the environment. That is why there are so many energy sources in our natural environment that have never been fully employed, (e.g., optical energy, thermal energy, wind energy, and bioelectrochemical and kinetic energy). Asahi Kasei Microdevices Corporation has developed a step-up DC-DC converter that works while only consuming 1μW of power. This converter, helps provide a long term, multipoint and low-cost sensing network, thus accelerating large-scale IoT (Internet of Things) implementations.

DESCRIPTION:

This exhibition will use electric circuits developed using advanced technology in order to extract a small amount of power from water and randomly turn on 90 LED lights installed throughout the gallery. We hope you will enjoy this environmental art installation employing water and light.
